Outlaw Gunner

The Outlaw Gunner exhibit was on display from June 2024 to March 2025 at the Talbot Historical Society in the Larry Denton Extended Museum at 25 S. Washington St., Easton. This exhibit was based on the book of the same title by Dr. Harry Walsh, gunner, surgeon, co-founder of the Waterfowl Festival and much more. This special exhibit chronicled the history of waterfowl and the Chesapeake Bay through the eyes of Dr. Walsh and discussed the need for waterfowl conservation. On display were artifacts from Dr. Walsh’s personal collection on loan from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Department, artifacts from the collection of his son, Joe Walsh, and from the Waterfowl Festival’s collection. This exhibit was viewed by hundreds of visitors and accompanied by the reenactment of a Star Democrat reporter and a waterfowl hunter during the Waterfowl Festival Weekend in 2024.

Joe Walsh, son of Dr. Harry Walsh who was a co-founder of the Waterfowl Festival in Easton, Maryland, takes us through the Talbot Historical Society exhibit (Talbot County, Maryland). He explains the journey of outlaw gunning waterfowl on the Chesapeake to a shift in focus on conservation and preservation with the founding of the Waterfowl Festival. This exhibit was on display in 2024.
